Description

Nikitaras smashed the cavalry of Dramapassa“.

The Battle of Doliana and the Vervena took place in May 1821, between the Greek revolutionaries led by Nikitas Stamatelopoulos (Nikitaras) and the Turks, in Ano Doliana and Vervena in Arcadia, in the context of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

The battle thwarted the disbandment of the camp at Vervena and the plan of the Turks. It also boosted the morale of the rebels and paved the way for the fall of Tripoli, as the besiegers advanced their camps closer to the city, to places such as Zarakova and Trikorfa. Nikitaras also won the nickname of “Turkophagus” meaning exterminator of the Turks.
