Athanasios Diakos

Athanasios Diakos was born in 1788 in Ano Mousanitsa, Fokida or in neighboring Artotina, where his mother came from.

He was one of the Greek protagonists heroes – chiefs of the first year of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

He acted in Central Greece and was a hero of the battle of Alamana.

Description

According to one version, his real name was Athanasios Grammatikos or according to others Athanasios Massavetas. Apparently, it comes from the status of his ancestors. He was initiated in the Friendly Society in 1818 and in 1820 became armatolos (armed Christians who usually were joined by the Ottoman authorities and assigned to maintain order in an area (armatoliki)) in Livadia.

In April 1821 in collaboration with other chiefs occupied the fortress of Livadia and using it as a base, set victorious battles. He captured the bridge of Alamana and on April 23, 1821, fought against the troops of Omer Vryonis. In this battle, he was arrested and after he was transferred in Lamia, he was assassinated with impalement by the Turks on April 24, 1821 ( it
is literary stated that he was “skewered”). The Greek Army honorably awarded him with the rank of General.
