Description

This baptism was received by the disciples and Apostles of Christ but also by Jesus Christ himself. The ritual was very simple, since, in running water, John the Baptist baptized the faithful and called them to repentance. This baptism was a precursor to the baptism of the church but had a different content and meaning in relation to the institutionalized baptism of the newly formed church. The purpose was to prepare for the coming of the Messiah and the repentance of the faithful Jews.

When Jesus was 30 years old, he was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, who was six months older and was leaving an ascetic life in the desert, proclaiming the baptism of repentance. At the moment of Baptism, the Holy Spirit descended from heaven in the form of a dove on Jesus and at the same time a voice from heaven was heard saying: “This is the beloved Son of God, through whom God has pleased to save sinners.” This fact has been recorded by three of the four Evangelists, Mark, Matthew and Luke. This is not the first and only appearance in the Holy Trinity, according to the Scriptures.
