The last moments of Messolonghi are tragically and wonderfully captured in the painting (1827) by François Emile de Lansac which is exhibited in the Museum of History and Art of Messolonghi.

Description

The Messolonghi men had decided to kill all the women and children so that they would not fall into the hands of the Turks, a decision which was revoked at the last moment with the decisive intervention of Metropolitan Joseph.

However, a Mesolonghi woman, after the death of her husband, after she has killed her child she is holding in her arms, is preparing to kill herself so that they do not fall into the hands of the enemies.
