The Karaiskaki Camp

Painting by Vryzakis Theodoros 1814 or 1819 – 1878.

This painting depicts the camp of Karaiskakis in Faliro, when the Greeks were preparing in April 1827 to occupy the Acropolis besieged by the Turks. Greeks and philhellenes are lined up in a zone on the first level, while a middle level on the right leads the view to the hill, where the army chiefs examine the battlefield.

Description

The Acropolis can be seen in the background on the left. In the center about a Greek rests on an ancient marble, a reference to the ancient heritage. A priest on the right blesses the fighters. The officer in the blue uniform on the left is the Bavarian philhellene Kratzisen.

From these plans, Vryzakis draws the physiognomies of the fighters on the hill: Karaiskakis, Makrygiannis, Tzavelas, Notaras, the Scotsman Gordon, the English Hastings and Carl von The Greek flag is waving on the top right. The stage is dominated by the golden red and brown that characterize the works of Vryzakis. The description combines intensity, anticipation, but also relaxation.
